The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ and Agents’ Association has decided to go on an indefinite strike from September 1, to protest against the State government for non-payment of dues to transporters.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, G R Shanmugappa, president of the association, said that the government owes them Rs 85 crore, which is the due amount for ferrying tonnes of food grains across the State as part of the Anna Bhagya scheme.

He said that 232 transporters across the State are yet to receive their dues but despite repeated reminders to the department officials and writing letters to the Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, there has been no word on payment, yet.

He added that, on an average, around 4,500 trips were being made every day to transport food grains and the that the government gave only false assurances.
