The Tribunal was constituted in November 2010 to resolve the sharing of Mahadayi water among Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.

Accordingly, a gazette notification to this effect was issued last week, extending its tenure under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.

The Tribunal published its final award in August 2018, but all three states raised objections. Goa also approached the Supreme Court against the final award.

Since then, the Tribunal has received several extensions.
