According to a press release, the vessel started its operation of unloading 139 boxes of raw cashew for distribution among various cashew processing units situated in and around Mangalore and sailed out on Wednesday.

The advantage of Main Line vessel directly calling at the Port is the lesser transit time and lesser handling cost.  It will take only 8 days between Mangalore and East Africa but vessels via Colombo will take 21 days.

Return voyage
The exporters can utilize the advantage of moving their export cargo since the vessel is touching Singapore and far East countries in the return voyage, the release stated.
“The increased number of Main Line vessels calling at the Port has resulted in growth of container traffic,” said NMPT Chairman P Tamilvanan. A record quantity of 4,579 TEUs (91,127 tonnes) of raw cashew has been handled during the current  financial year 2009-10 (upto November) as against 3741 TEUs(74,447 tonnes) handled during the previous year. Three more main line vessels are expected to call NMPT shortly.
