Mangaluru: Mangaluru East police have arrested a notorious interstate thief wanted in multiple cases, including vehicle theft and chain snatching, across various parts of Karnataka.
Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH identified the arrested person as Adit Gopan alias Muthu Krishna, a 32-year-old native of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The police official informed that Adit was taken into custody on December 4 near Kadri Jogi Mutt during a vehicle inspection. The arrested was produced before court on Friday, which in turn remanded him in police custody for three days.
The cops have recovered four stolen two wheeler vehicles, and gold ornaments worth Rs five lakh from him.
Commissioner said that the police intercepted him after noticing suspicious behaviour while riding a two-wheeler. The vehicle was found to be stolen from Surathkal in Mangaluru. During interrogation, he confessed of using stolen motorcycles in chain snatching. His target was elderly and lone women.
The arrested is linked cases including snatching a 1.5-pawan gold chain from an 83-year-old woman in Kadri Battagudde on November 21, threatening a woman with a knife and robbing a 2-pawan chain in Mulki on September 27, and vehicle thefts in Byndoor, Kundapur, and Surathkal.
Adit Gopan is said to be a habitual offender with four house theft cases in Tamil Nadu, where he had served in jail at Nagercoil. After release, he travelled across India by train, stealing motorcycles near railway stations and committing thefts.
The operation was carried out by Mangaluru East Police Inspector Ananth Padmanabha and Kadri Police station personnel.
The Commissioner said that 72 two-wheeler thefts have been reported in various police stations coming under Mangaluru Commissionerate limits. Of which, 57, two-wheelers have been traced, overachieving a recovery rate of 79 per cent.
