Mangaluru: In a swift operation, police personnel prevented a 75-year-old man from attempting suicide by jumping into the river from Pavanje bridge on the outskirts of Mangaluru.
DCP (crime and traffic) Ravishankar said in a complaint filed by Nithin at the Barke Police Station, Vishwanath Shetty (75), a resident of the PVS Kalakunja area in Mangaluru, had left home earlier in the day stating he was going to Kudroli Temple but failed to return. Concerned, his family reported him missing.
Acting immediately, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sudhakar of Barke Police Station relayed the information to the ERSS-112 emergency response system.
Responding to the alert, head constables Yogeesh and Kishore Kumar, and constable Madhukar—on ERSS-112 duty under the jurisdiction of Mulki Police Station—acted swiftly. Acting on a tip-off, they rushed to the Pavanje bridge where they spotted Vishwanath Shetty attempting to end his life by jumping into the river.
With timely intervention and help from members of the public, the officers managed to stop him and bring him to safety, said the DCP.
It is said that Shetty had been suffering from a chronic skin condition and had grown mentally distressed, which led him to attempt suicide.
