Mayor B L Bhyrappa on Monday gave full credit to the people as well as officials of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) after being ranked the country’s cleanest city.

Bhyrappa, who received the award from Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu, said with co-operation from the people in following the rules, the city administration succeeded in maintaining cleanliness.

“The city bagged first rank as it adopted scientific disposal of waste, recycling and made it free of open defecation,” C G Betsurmath, Commissioner, MCC, told Deccan Herald.

Apart from routine cleanliness, the corporation has made collection of garbage from source, from households or commercial establishments, only after segregating it as dry and wet. “Apart from transporting it to the solid waste management plant, we are ensuring 82 to 90 per cent of the waste is converted to compost,” he said.

Mysuru has become 100 per cent open defecation free city by encouraging public to construct a toilet in every household besides building public toilets. The city administration also created awareness on maintaining hygiene by involving NGOs as well as educational institutions.

Apart from having a 100 per cent underground drainage system, the city administration imposes fine on the public, if they are found littering or not following cleanliness rules, he said.
