Mangaluru Mayor Kavitha Sanil won the gold medal in the National-level Open Karate Championship, organised by the Self Defence School of Indian Karate Mangaluru Dojo at Nehru Maidan on Sunday.

The mayor is taking part in Karate championship after nine years. After winning the gold medal, she hoped that she would qualify for the Tokyo Olympics of 2020.

In the semi final, Sanil had won against Kavya 8-0. She had participated in Above 65 kg black belt category. In the final round, she won against Nisha Nayak 7-3. Initially, Nisha gave a tough competition to Sanil, who later overpowered her and won the gold medal.

She has bagged 58 gold medals, 18 silver medals in the past and was a national champion from 1992-2008. She got married in 2007 and her last championship was in 2008 when she was two and a half months pregnant.
