As a precautionary measure to avoid water scarcity in the city, the MCC has decided to store water up to 6 metres at Thumbe vented dam from January 11.
Informing the same to reporters here on Wednesday, Mayor Kavitha Sanil said that the deputy commissioner has directed officials to store water up to 6 metres from midnight of January 11. As a result, about 50.88 acres of land belonging to 37 families on the banks of river Nethravathi would submerge and steps will be taken to pay the compensation which would come up to Rs 37 to Rs 40 crores.
As of now, the water-level in Thumbe is 5 metres and it would be increased to 6 metres from Thursday following which the City can be supplied water up to 60 days.
Meanwhile, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer has cautioned residents on the banks of the river to be careful in the wake of rise in water level from Thursday.
