The State government will evolve a new mechanism to check power theft, Energy Minister D K Shivakumar has said.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, the minister said that all linemen and meter readers will be asked to submit a report to the officials concerned on power theft and unauthorised connections in their respective areas of operation, within 15 days.

Transformer repair centre and transformer bank would be set up in each taluk, and local MLAs would also be informed about the availability of transformers.

It has been planned to replace old electricity meters which would save up to seven per cent of electricity, he added.

The officials have been asked to encourage at least 25 farmers growing commercial crops in each taluk to instal meters for their pump sets so that they can get three-phase power supply at reduced tariff, he added.
