To begin with, a biennial regimental commanders’ conference will be held to discuss and deliberate on issues pertaining to training and human resource aspects in the Madras Sappers.

Living up to their legacy in water sports, the MEG will also be organising a grand ‘Regatta’, a series of boat races, at Ulsoor lake. A ceremonial parade will also be held on Saturday.

The MEG, which was founded in 1780, undertakes engineering operations of the army; MEG troops have played a vital role in all major wars fought since then, both under the Union Jack and the tricolour. For their outstanding contribution and performance in war, the group has been awarded two battle honours and one theater honour, post independence. The group was presented with the President’s Colours in 1990 by the then President R Venkatraman.

The ‘thambis’, as they are fondly called, have also played a sterling role in nation-building. MEG has also contributed significantly in all rescue and relief operations after all natural calamities and disasters that have struck the nation till date.
