Kodagu, which is acclaimed as the Scotland of South India, has been feeling the ire of unfavourable weather as the mercury has been soaring since the first week of March.

The entire picture of the Malnad region has changed with the crops drying up and rivers getting dry.

People have been trying to cool themselves by drinking tender coconut water and cold drinks. In cities, many search for trees to get some shade, to get a respite from the blazing sun.

Many felt that after the incessant rains last August the summer will not be cruel. But that belief has turned upside down.

During the last three days, the maximum temperature has increased to 32 degree Celsius. There are possibilities of the mercury level soaring further in April.

A few senior citizens stated that such weather in Kodagu during summer was unseen before. People have been preferring to stay indoor in the afternoon.

Children and women have been using umbrellas to protect themselves from the scorching sun. Young women cover their faces with dupattas to avoid getting a tan.

There is a huge demand for tender coconuts, watermelons, cold water and cold drinks.

Tourists, as well as local residents, have been thronging the juice centres.

However, the number of tourists has drastically come down in the district.

As there is a huge area of forest in Kodagu, people fear the outbreak of forest fire. The Forest Department officials have kept a vigil in this regard and are ready with the necessary equipment to douse fires which could erupt at any time.

Health and Family Welfare Department officers have suggested people not to work outside between 11 am and 4 pm. In the case of skin rashes and an increase in body temperature, one should consult a doctor.

Asha workers and anganwadi workers have been asked to create awareness among people to take precautionary measures, said officials.
