Raichur's temperature could touch a record 44 degrees Celsius this summer.

The mercury has been hovering around 42 degrees Celsius in the last few days. If India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast is any indication, Raichur may equal the highest mark of 44 degrees Celsius recorded 20 years ago.

The maximum temperature in April last year was 42.3 degrees Celsius. It may cross 43 degrees soon, predict IMD officials.

Sweltering heat has thrown life out of gear. The drinking water crisis is acute in rural areas as people and cattle are running out of water.

The small quantity of water they have stored is running out. Vegetable vendors rue that they incur losses as intense heat is affecting the quality of vegetables. They are unable to stock vegetables beyond two days. "I feel giddy due to hot and humid conditions," said Narasamma, a vendor.

Vikas, a college student, says they demand regular water supply.
