For 46-year-old Vinisha Nero, the newly nominated member of the Legislative Assembly under the Anglo-Indian quota, higher education and welfare of senior citizens are the top priorities.
Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa administered the oath to Nero in Bangalore on Saturday. She said as a legislator she would like to take steps to ensure access to higher education to members of her community. Besides working for welfare of senior citizens, she said she would also work towards the preservation of the Anglo-Indian culture.
After a gap of 40 years, an Anglo-Indian woman has been nominated to the Assembly.
Nero was offered nomination to the Assembly in 2000 by the then chief minister S M Krishna, but she had declined the offer owing to family commitments.
She is the chairperson of the Bangalore chapter of the Indian Association of Secretaries and Administrative Professionals (IASAP), with a membership of over 1,600 qualified women management secretaries, executive secretaries and steno-secretaries in India.
Nero started her career early at the age of 16 and took the job of a personal secretary in a private firm. She continued her studies, while attending work. She eventually got her MPhil on the subject - The Social and Economic Status of Anglo-Indians. Nero said she would also strive to secure a community centre for Anglo-Indians in the State.
