MLC polls from teachers, graduates seats today

As many as 90 candidates are trying their luck in the biennial election to four seats of the Teachers and Graduates constituencies of the Legislative Council in the state on June 9.

Elections are being held to the West Teachers constituency; South Graduates constituency; North West Teachers constituency; and North West Graduates constituency.

Elections have been effected as the term of MLCs Go Madhusudhan (BJP), Arun Shahapur (BJP), Mahantesh Koujalagi (Congress) and Basavaraj Horatti (JDS) will be ending on July 4.

MLCs Horatti, Shahapur and Koujalagi are in the fray again, with Horatti fighting for the record seventh term.

In the 75-member Legislative Council, seven members each are elected from Teachers and Graduates constituencies while 25 members are elected from the Legislative Assembly and another 25 members are elected by local authorities. The remaining 11 are nominated by the Governor. Electorate from the following districts will be casting their votes — Mysuru, Hassan, Mandya and Chamarajanagar (South Graduates constituency); Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag (West Teachers constituency); Belagavi, Bagalkot, Vijayapura (North West Graduates and North West Teachers constituency).
The three political parties — the BJP, the Congress and the JD(S) have fielded candidates to all the seats.

The BJP has fielded M Nagaraj (West Teachers), M V Ravishankar (South Graduates), Arun Shahapur (Northwest Teachers), Hanumanth Nirani (Northwest Graduates).

Congress’s candidates are T Eshwar, H N Ravindra, Ningappa B Bannur; while the JD(S)’s candidates are Horatti, K T Srikantegowda, S S Angadi, and S M Patil from the same constituencies.
