Sindhagi police resorted to caning and fired in the air when a mob from Nagavi B K Tanda gathered in front of the police station demanding the release of a woman belonging to the tanda and pelted the police personnel with stones.
Nine policemen, including circle police inspector M Chidambar, sub-inspector Manjunath Kusagal, assistant sub-inspector D H Maggad, were injured in the incident.
Six of them were admitted to the district government hospital for treatment.
According to reports, Chennamma (35) of Nagavi B K Tanda was reported missing since November 10 last year. Her husband Gopichand Pawar, employed in Dubai, had filed a missing case at Sindhagi police station on February 21.
Pawar, who had deposited money, bought gold and other properties in his wife’s name, demanded that she be released so that the properties could be retrieved.
The police traced Chennamma and on learning that she did not wish to return to her husband or the tanda, sent her to the Women’s Reception Centre in Bijapur.
An angry Pawar collected around hundred people of his tanda and marched to Sindhagi police station. On being informed that Chennamma was not around, the crowd turned violent. Police have launched a search for the culprits.
