At a meeting with the Primary and Secondary Education Department officials, the KKC has asked the State to identify four districts that can be considered for a pilot project basis for the proposed service.
The Department is expected to identify the districts in a month. “The mobile internet van will feature high-speed internet service along with big screens to move in vans. The concept will be similar to that of mobile library services, with books being replaced by screens in this case,” explained Dr N K Sridhar, KKC member.
The main objective of this service is to create interest among children studying in Government schools. “Our primary target audience is the schoolchildren and the teachers at the Government schools in these districts. Once interest is generated they can learn quickly and contribute,” said Sridhar.
Criteria
The criteria for identifying the four districts will be decided upon by the Primary and Secondary Department and relayed to the KKC. One criterion may also include that of the district being backward in terms of development. “While a constant place for internet service will need to have a constant supply of power and internet services, with some not even availing power at a constant time the mobile vans will be of a lot of
importance,” said Sridhar.
According to the KKC, 10 Gram Panchyats are being looked at for providing “Public Libraries-cum-Knowledge Centres”.
While the idea is still at a conceptual stage, the KKC is looking at these districts on a pilot project basis to provide accessible information for the people.
