Industries and Commerce Minister R V Deshpande has urged the Centre to modify the new crop insurance scheme for the benefit of arecanut and pepper growers in Karnataka.
In a letter dated July 19 to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Deshpande said the scheme covers loss incurred due to climatic adversities. All types of risks, including damage due to diseases like kole roga, should also be covered. Premium for the insurance cover should be reduced to 2% from 5% for commercial crops like arecanut and pepper, he suggested.
