Vishwanath Suvarna, a former RSS pracharak who worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for nearly eight years in Chandigarh in the 90s, passed away at his home due to illness on Friday. He was 67.

Suvarna is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. His health had reportedly deteriorated and he was in coma for the last few days. He had suffered kidney failure after which he was admitted to a hospital. He also underwent a surgery for clot in the brain, after which he did not recover.

After the stint in Punjab, Suvarna met Modi in 2008 during the latter’s visit to Sullia for an election campaign. In 2010, Suvarna met Modi again at the chief minister’s office in Gujarat. Suvarna had told Deccan Herald on May 21 before Modi took charge as the Prime Minister that he knew his friend would occupy the highest position in politics some day.
“Having lived with him for years, I have seen his capability as an organiser and a leader. I am confident that he has all the capacity to be a world-class leader,” Suvarna had said.
