More laws are needed to protect women’s rights in the country, the High Court of Karnataka observed on Friday.
Justice A N Venugopala Gowda made the observation while hearing a petition by Raghaveshwara Bharathi, the head of Ramachandrapura Mutt who has been booked for rape.
The bench heard the seer’s objection to the prosecution’s demand for conducting his medical examination. The seer’s advocate contended that the prosecution had not mentioned as to what kind of specific tests it would conduct. Besides, it was violation of the godman’s privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, the counsel argued.
Justice Gowda has adjourned the next hearing to Monday.
Upgrade forensic lab
The High Court on Friday asked the State government why it cannot create facilities like those available at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Hyderabad.
Hearing a criminal petition, Justice A N Venugopala Gowda demanded why the government could not create similar facilities in the State. The bench asked the public prosecutors why there was a huge backlog of cyber crime cases.
It suggested that the government invest in equipment and establish a laboratory in Karnataka to facilitate speedy disposal of cyber crime cases.
