Kushalnagar: Urging the government not to close Kodagu University, a 'jatha' was taken out from Chikkaluvara to Kushalnagar under the leadership of ABVP on Friday.
Former MLA M P Appacchu Ranjan flagged-off the 'jatha' and said that the university was established by the BJP government during the tenure of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Earlier, Rs 15 crore grants were sanctioned to Jnana Kaveri Postgraduate centre in Chikka Aluvara during the tenure of CM B S Yediyurappa.
"But, the Congress led state government has totally ignored the university, no grants are provided," he alleged and warned of intensifying the protests.
Mysore-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar said that education and health are the two major requisites for a good society. "But, the state government has totally mismanaged the finances and as a result, the universities are being closed. Government universities are the rays of hope for students from middle and lower middle class families who want to pursue postgraduate studies", he said and urged the state government not to close the university.
MLC M P Suja Kushalappa and others took part in the padayatra along with hundreds of students.
The students raised slogans on the occasion and urged the government to shelve the move to close Kodagu University.
They later formed a human chain at Field Marshal Cariappa Circle.
A memorandum was later submitted to the government through Tahsildar Kiran Gowraiah.
ABVP National executive committee member Mandara, state executive member Gandharva district leaders Ambika and Amritamba were present among others.
