Sahaja Samruddha, an association of organic farmers in the country, inaugurated ‘Nature Store’, an outlet of the produce of organic farmers in the city.

The outlet deals with organic red rice, vegetables, seeds, etc and sells product procured from 30 organic farmer associations in the region.

National award winning farmer, Sayyed Ghani Khan, speaking at the inaugural ceremony said that the local breeds of crops grown in the region from centuries, were less water intensive and disease prone, as compared to hybrid varieties available in the market.

“Efforts should be made to conserve local breeds and popularise their cultivation,” he said. Ghani Khan is also known for his conservation efforts of local breeds of crops and is undertaking conservation of 567 varieties of rice breed.

Organic farmer, Rechanna said that some local breeds of crops which grow in different weather conditions are beneficial to both farmers and nature. Growing such indigenous breeds without using chemical fertilisers should be encouraged among the farming community in the region, he said.
