Delivering the inaugural address to the Launch Workshop of the research project ‘Study of the status and nature of variability in freshwater bivalves in the western ghats and identification of species with commercial value’ at Mangalagangothri on Tuesday, he said that there is a need for novel methods to improve agriculture as well as the life of the rural folk.
Explaining the purpose of NAIP, Dr Bandyopadhyay informed that the project deals with the agricultural research systems to make it ready to accept innovation as well as to deliver it. The aim of the project is also to increase the size of the national agricultural research system by bringing people from all sections into it, he said and added that there is a need to create interest in people from other disciplines in agriculture.
Chairperson of the Consortium Advisory Committee Prof Indrani Karunasagar in her address declared that the NAIP has brought down some walls that existed between sciences in the past and added that it is an amalgamation of two different kinds of sciences. She reflected upon the irrelevance of degrees in the present scenario and the importance of individual effort.
Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Prof K K Achary presided over the function.
Vice Chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa, Chairman of the Department of Biosciences Prof M Krishnamoorthy, Consortium Principal Investigator Dr S Thippeswamy and Co- Principal Investigator Prof Hukum D Singh were present on the occasion.
