River Nethravathi, that takes it birth at Elaneer in Samse and confluences with Kumaradhara at Uppinangady, flows as a lifeline of Dakshina Kannada district.
For the last two days, however, the river is stagnating near Sangama in Uppinangady.
From Elaneer, the river passes through Didupe, Kajoor, Kolli, Dharmasthala, Kokkada, Neerakatte and joins a few other water bodies in between as it flows across the district.
Following the failure of the pre-monsoon shower, the river has gone dry – a phenomenon not seen with the river in the past few years. Nethravathi has stopped flowing a few metres away from Sri Sahasralingesgwara temple.
From 2010 till date, it is in 2016 that the region has received the lowest level of pre-monsoon shower. According to the available statistics, Uppinangady and Kokkada had received 99 mm rainfall from January till May 5, 2011.
In 2012, the region had received 102 mm rainfall, in 2013, 122mm, in 2014, a rainfall of 105 mm and in 2015, 167.80 mm rainfall. This year, however, only 5 mm rainfall has been received in Uppinangady, which has struck the river badly.
