A group of Bhangis, who work as night soil carriers in certain parts of North Karnataka, on July 20 last year staged a protest on the Savanur Town Municipal Council premises by pouring human faeces on their bodies, after they were evicted from their houses.
The Savanur Town Municipal Council had decided to evict the families and build a commercial complex on the land.
Minister for Urban Development Suresh Kumar held a discussion with a group of individuals who had taken up the cause of the community in Bangalore on Tuesday.
He said the government would provide necessary help and assistance to the community. Though the Haveri Deputy Commissioner had said there were technical problems in providing employment, clearance had been procured from the Finance department, he said.
Besides, sources in the department said, the four families have been already provided with land, houses, water and electricity connection.
The community members, who are treated as the lowest among the Dalits, resorted to the extreme form of protest at Savanur after their pleas went unheard, leading to agitations by various Dalit organisations.
Earlier, a High Court Bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar had directed the government to rehabilitate the 296 Bhangi community members before June 30.
