The English teachers at government high schools equipped with a diploma, will have to secure a degree in English through correspondence in the next three years while in service. The court had ordered demotion of such 4,000-odd teachers.

However, primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar, who held a meeting to address the issue on Tuesday, said that such teachers would be allowed to continue teaching English. He said that the government had decided to amend Cadre and Recruitment Rules for accommodating these teachers. The teachers will be able to apply for the degree only after the rules are amended and gazetted.

The minister also said that the matter pertaining to the recruitment of high school and PU teachers would be sorted out after February 23, as the model code of conduct for taluk and zilla panchayat elections is in force.
