Speaking at a function organised on the occasion of International Noise Awareness Day on Wednesday, he said: “Honking was a part of the bigger problem of noise pollution and it is not for the police alone to handle.”
The day is usually celebrated as ‘No Honking Day’ to increase awareness in people about the need to have lower decibel levels on the streets.
DG&IG Ajai Kumar Singh said the most common indication in traffic violations was a lack of consideration for other people. Violations like signal jumping, illegal parking and uneccesary honking were all a manifestation of this attitude.
Justice Manjula Chellur said people had learnt to endure noise pollution like any other problem. “The stakeholders should be made aware not just about reducing noise pollution, but also about the dangers of being exposed to high decibel levels,” she commented.
