Energy Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday said power utilities in the State would not resort to power cuts in urban areas till May this year.
He said the State had enough power to meet the demand till May. The average demand is an estimated 8,000 mega watt during this period. Besides, an additional 700 MW will be added to the State grid in February after the commissioning of the third unit of the Ballari thermal power unit.
On the proposed Shivanasamudra hydro-power project at Shimsa, the minister said steps were being taken to implement the project at the earliest. There will not be any constraint on implementing the project if the cost is less than Rs 1,000 crore. So, the Energy department is reworking the project, he said.
The Tamil Nadu government had recently raised objection to the project saying Karnataka had not sought permission for the project. The neighbouring state has been arguing that the project would affect the flow of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
