The State government has been planning to set up a nuclear medicine centre in Uttara Kannada district, Deputy Commissioner Ujwal Kumar has said.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, the deputy commissioner said the nuclear medicine centre would be set up under corporate social responsibility programme and that he had discussed the proposal with the head of Kaiga Atomic Power Station.
‘Cancer on rise’
“Mumbai-based Tata Memorial Institute has been conducting a health survey in the villages around Kaiga nuclear plant. In its report filed last year, the Institute has indicated increasing incidences of cancer in and around Kaiga. The survey is being conducted every six months,” the deputy commissioner said.
He said it had come to his notice that 26 doctors appointed to Karwar Medical College were not staying at the headquarters and he would soon file a report on their style of functioning to the Medical Education department.
