He was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on ‘Importance and Benefits of Compliance under Labour Laws’ organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) on Tuesday.

Umashankar said that about three lakh establishments had registered with the Department of Labour under Shops and Establishments Act, but there were more than five lakh remaining.

“We are trying to eliminate middlemen by simplifying the procedures and enable these establishments to register online,” he said.

Speaking on the effort to simplify the number of labour laws, he said a proposal had been submitted to the State and a committee had been formed to look into the matter.
“It will be done in a year’s time,’ he promised.
