Of the 36.50 lakh metric tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in Karnataka per annum, only 22% is being processes, according to the report of a Parliamentary panel.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Development, in its report, said solid waste processing in Karnataka is lower than the national average of 23.70%.
Telangana stood top in the country in waste management by processing 67% of waste while the neighbouring Kerala processes 45% of MSW. However, Tamil Nadu fares poor by processing just 8% trash.
In Karnataka, of the total 6,464 wards in urban local bodies, garbage is being collected from door-to-door in 3,962 wards. The garbage is 100% segregated at source in 1,311 wards, said the report tabled in Parliament.
The panel headed by Pinaki Mishra suggested that the Ministry of Urban Development must take up the matter with the states to scale up the waste processing and emphasise on collection, transportation, processing to achieve 100% solid waste management in the country.
