Over 20 injured in rooftop collapse in Bellary taluk

More than 20 people including many women and children were injured after the roof of a house, on which they were standing to view Muharram procession, collapsed at Kudatini village in Bellary taluk on Tuesday morning.

Three people who have been severely injured are identified as Bandenawaz, Kamala and Huligemma. They have fractured their head, legs and thighs, police said. 

Police said that the uninhabited mud house was in front of the mosque and many people had gathered on the rooftop to catch the glimpse of the procession. 

However, the structure was weak and couldn’t withstand the pressure and collapsed, they added. Incidentally, the procession was coming to an end when the incident occurred. The injured were rushed to Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary in four l08 ambulances called from Kudatini, Kurugodu and Bellary. Though most of the injured are out of danger, they have fractured their bones, police added.

Following the collapse of the rooftop, tension prevailed for sometime in the region. A large of number people had gathered at the spot. However, police had a tough time dispersing the crowd and facilitating the shifting of the injured to hospital.
