'Pay excise tax arrears by Oct 31 or face music'Rs 251 cr principal amount is due to be collected, which sums up to Rs 460 cr

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday after holding a meeting with the officials at Excise Office in Mangalore, he said that in case the defaulter has registered fake name, then the asset of the person who has given surety will be confiscated.

He said that details of arrears over the last 25 years has been collected. A total of Rs 251 crore principal amount is due to be collected, which sums up to Rs 460 crore with interest.

The minister promised that in case the defaulters pay the amount due by October 31, then he will discuss in the cabinet the proposal of waiving off the interest amount.
He said that there are over 150 defaulters in the State and about 25 in the district.

Royalty

Renukacharya said that the government has set a target of Rs 7,500 crore for 2010-11 and the department has already collected royalty of Rs 4,070 crore during April to September. Last year target was set at Rs 6,500 crore but the department collected Rs 7,100 crore. A total of 239 lakh cartons have been sold from April-September, which is 37 lakh carton more than last year.Informing that more emphasis will be laid on conducting raids, Renukacharya said that 571 large and medium hooch brewing centres were raided and as many as 219 centres have been closed down completely.

“I have instructed the officials to hold raids frequently. The purpose is to wash out illicit liquor brewing centres completely and to control flow of liquor into the State from other states,” said the Minister.

He informed that brewing centres which have been functioning for the last 40 years at Mugali of Honnavara and Yalakundli in Sagara taluk have been closed down.

Excise Gram Sabha

The Minister instructed the officials to hold Grama Sabhas mandatorily in all the Panchayats and ward-level. “Gram Sabhas must be used as forum to spread awareness among the people on hooch and illicit liquor. The Self Help Groups and Stree Shakti groups can be deployed for spreading awareness. The officials can also gather information about existing brewing centres from the people during the meets,” he said.

Renukacharya said that the cases booked on vehicles used for transportation of illicit liquor will be settled soon.Excise Joint Commissioner K Bhimappa speaking about Mangalore division said that this year during April-September 30, 26,852 cartons were sold as against 26,13,384 cartons sold last year.
