A PIL has been filed in the High Court of Karnataka challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Act, 1995.

The petition, filed by K S Subramanyan, a Bengaluru-based educationist, argues that the law runs "contrary" to the secular principles of the Constitution as it intends to "promote a particular religion".

The high court has sought responses from central and state governments as well as the Wakf Board. It has, however, kept open the maintainability aspect of the petition.
