Police catch jewel thieves with booty

Ankola police have arrested a gang of six inter-state robbers near Baleguli Cross, on National Highway 66, on Saturday.

The gang was on the run following a successful jewellery heist.

Senior police officials said the gang was escaping in a vehicle from Panvel in Mumbai, towards Kerala. Gold ornaments, pearls, precious stones and gems worth crores of rupees, have been recovered from them.

The arrested have been identified as: Prakash from Suratkal, near Mangalore, Farookh and Hamjan Kunhi from Kasargod, Abdul Sattar from Kannur in Kerala, and Parvath Singh and his wife Renu alias Gayathri from Udaipur, Rajasthan. Two other gang-members are said to be absconding.

The gang had looted gold jewellery from R K Jewellers in Jaipur, owned by Ramkishore Agarwal, on June 24.

A case had been registered with the Mothi Dungri police station at Jaipur in this regard. Jaipur police will be arriving in Ankola to assess and value the jewellery.
