Tension prevailed for sometime at Hanur town, on Wednesday, after an irate mob manhandled policemen for exhuming a body and shifting it to another place. Though the policemen eventually succeeded in their task, more than 20 persons were booked for restraining sentinels from doing their duty.

The contentious issue here was exhuming the body of a homemaker, Pallavi, who had died under mysterious circumstances at RS Doddi Layout in the town, on Monday. Alleging the role of her husband and in-laws, the relatives of the deceased had performed the last rites by burying the body in front of her husband’s house on Tuesday.

Pallavi, wife of Mahesh, had reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself. Her relatives had raised suspicions on the nature of death and had buried the body, after post-mortem. Pallavi’s husband and in-laws have gone into hiding.

The neighbours raised objections to the body being buried in the vicinity of their houses and informed the police seeking their intervention. When the police personnel held discussions with the family members over exhuming the body, the situation turned volatile. The irate group attacked the cops and restrained them from removing the mortal remains. The uniforms of the cops were torn in the melee. Later, police booked a case against over 20 persons.

Murder?
Police exhumed the body in the presence of Kollegal Tahsildar Mahadevaiah, Dy SP Suresh Babu and others. It was later buried in an agricultural land belonging to her husband.

In his complaint to the police, Pallavi’s father Madevappa had alleged that his son-in-law Mahesh and his family members were mentally harassing his daughter for being issueless even after four years of marriage. He alleged that Pallavi may have been murdered.
