The stigma of zero pass percentage in II PU colleges has continued this year, with 40 colleges recording a big zero. Of this, four are government colleges and the remaining 36 are private unaided colleges.

Pre-University department Director Rashmi V Mahesh said that the department was taking a systemic view to improve the results. “We have issued notices to the managements of the colleges concerned to explain the results. However, we also need to take into account that there is a regional imbalance in these matters,” she said.

An analysis of the data shows two clear trends. One, a majority of the PU colleges have suffered poor results due to low enrollment. And secondly, poor results in PU colleges from backward regions of North Karnataka -- particularly Gulbarga, Raichur and Yadgir -- reflect the overall poor results in these districts.

Low enrollment

Of the 40 colleges which scored zero per cent, 21 colleges had single-digit students appearing for the examination. For instance, both SHL Evening PU College in Bangalore and Nalanda Composite PU College in Mangalore had just two students enrolled for the exam.

Another 12 colleges had less than 20 students appearing for the examination, which is only half the mandated strength in PU colleges. The remaining seven colleges had 20 or more candidates appearing for the examination .

Poor facilities

The simplest explanation for the poor results is that low enrollment, particularly in private colleges, is largely a result of poor or non-existent teaching facilities.

“Our guidelines state that each section should have at least 40 students. We will look into these guidelines when we come out with our policy to tackle low pass percentages,” Rashmi Mahesh said.

Backward districts

A look at the data shows that the majority of candidates appeared from colleges in backward regions of North Karnataka. Out of the 528 candidates who appeared from these 40 colleges, 192 were from 8 colleges in Gulbarga, 54 from 3 colleges in Raichur, and 35 from 2 colleges in Yadgir.

The worst performer was Mehboob Subhani PU College from Gulbarga, where all 71 students who appeared failed to clear the exam.
