On the eve of Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashami, the prices of flowers have skyrocketed in the City.
ahead of festive season and shoppers flocking markets on Tuesday had to dig deep into their pockets.
On Tuesday, a kg of kanakambara (crossandra) was sold at Rs 800- Rs 1000 while jasmine, which was priced Rs 250 per kg on Monday, sold at Rs 400 per kg at wholesale markets.
K Geetha, a resident of Banaswadi, shelved the idea of buying kanakambara and two other varieties of flowers after she checked the price list at KR Market. “However, on seeing the price list, I decided to buy only one variety of flower,” she said.
President of KR Market Flower Merchants’ Association, GM Diwakar attributed the price hike to the shortage in supplies of flowers specially jasmine, lily and Sevanthige and increased demand on Tuesday in view of Dasara festivities.
He said that while jasmine and lily comes from Tamil Nadu, other varieties of flowers such as kanakambara, kakada among others are sourced from Karnataka and other neighbouring states.
“Compared to last festive season, the rates of flowers have increased. From Wednesday onwards, the prices are expected to decline,” Diwakar said. However, the prices of vegetables and fruits remained, more or less, stable much to the relief of a common man.
