The district administration and Zilla Panchayat have launched a project to rejuvenate tanks (kalyanis) in the district.

The task began on Thursday with the commencement of the work on two tanks in Chamakalahalli village of the taluk.

Dr Vishwanath, Deputy Commissioner, Kolar, who inaugurated the work, said the project, initially launched in Mulbagal taluk would be extended across the district in a phased manner.

All tanks

He said all the tanks in the district would be covered under the project and NCC and NSS students would be roped in to clean up the tanks.

“Our ancestors constructed tanks to store water in times of drought. They served their purpose well. Tanks stand testimony to the farsightedness of the previous generation,” the DC said.

He said the whole community used to contribute its effort in constructing and maintaining tanks and called upon the young generation to join hands in preserving the water bodies for posterity.

Joint effort

The Deputy Commisioner said gram panchayat members and non-governmental organisations should come together in creating public awareness on the perils of reckless sand mining and its deleterious effect on the future generation.

He lamented that ground water in the district has depleted owing to unbridled sand mining. The Commissioner later interacted with the villagers.

Rejuvenation of the tanks in Utukuntimittur village of Mulabtgal taluk will be taken up in a fortnight.

Superintendent of Police Ramnivas Sepat, Additional Deputy Commissioner Peddappaiah, ZP chief executive officer Rajendra Cholan and others were present.
