The city witnessed a number of protests on Tuesday, with the aggrieved knocking on the doors of the Deputy Commissioner. BJP workers led by Mysore and Kodagu MP Prathap Simha took out a protest rally against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, condemning him for his “anti-backward classes” stand, after ascending the seat of power.
The rallyists who marched from Babu Jagjivan Ram Circle in front of the railway station to Deputy Commissioner’s office, alleged that Siddaramaiah who rose to power on Ahinda (Kannada acronym for Alpasankyatha, hindulida and dalit) plank, later “ditched” them to win over the minorities through the Shadi Bhagya scheme.
The protesters alleged that the present Congress govern-ment spiked welfare schemes launched by the previous BJP government in the State. The then government had given an opportunity to the applicants of Basava Housing Scheme to open accounts in any bank to avail the benefit.
However, the present government had asked the beneficiaries to open the account in a particular bank. Though a whopping 35,000 applications were distributed under D Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Welfare scheme, only 1,600 benefic-iaries had been identified. Though the previous BJP government had sanctioned Rs 1,700 crore for D Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Develop-ment Corporation, the present government had been ineffective in releasing money.
Housing schemes
Alleging injustice to the people who have been waiting for houses under the various housing schemes, the aggrieved took out a mammoth rally under the banner of Rajya Dravida Maha Sabha (RDMS), in the city, on Tuesday. The rally flagged off from the Town Hall premises culminated at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
According to the rallyists, though the government promised houses to the homeless, under various schemes like Ambedkar Housing, Ashraya, Krishna Kuteera, Basava, Indira Awas and Rajiv Awas, Vajpayee and Janata Houses, genuine beneficiaries were still waiting for the same. Though Ashraya Houses were constructed for the roofless, people already owning houses and sites have reaped the benefits.
Though there was a restriction on the resale of the houses till 14 years of its allotment, many had sold it through general power of attorney (GPA).
DYFO protest
Members of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFO) continued their indefinite strike, in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday, demanding regularisation of the services of gangmen who were recruited by KPTCL. According to the protesters, the gangmen who were recruited during the year 2004-05, were yet to be regularised. Some among them have been already relieved from their services, they said.
Against Hindi
Members of Mysore Kannada Vedike on Tuesday staged protest in front of the DC’s office in the city, condemning the alleged move by BJP led NDA government to forcibly impose Hindi on the populace.
