This year’s result of 48.93 pc may be slightly lower than last year, yet it marks a significant improvement over the results of the previous three years.

In 2008, the department got a big jolt as results dipped from 50 pc in 2007 to 41.31 pc, a massive drop of nearly 9 pc.

Exam reforms

After some introspection, the department cited the examination reforms introduced for the SSLC examinations as a factor.

In 2006, the pattern of SSLC examination was changed with nearly 60 pc of the questions in the objective format.

While the measures boosted SSLC results significantly, the PU department contended that the changes resulted in students unprepared in answering longer, essay-type questions.

While the results registered a small improvement in the subsequent year to 43 pc, the results really picked up to 49 pc last year.

But, in the light of performance over the past decade, it has much to do to capture its previous heights. While in 2005, the pass percentage was 52.77 pc,  it was 53.97 pc in 2006.
