The Election Commission of India on Tuesday directed the Union Ministry of Water Resources to put on hold its decision to set up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB), till the completion of the Karnataka Assembly polls.
Earlier, the Ministry had sought the Commission’s permission to go ahead with its proposal to set up the Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) to monitor the water management in the Cauvery basin reservoirs, as per the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
Recently, while hearing the Tamil Nadu government's petition seeking early constitution of the CMB and the CWRC, the Supreme Court had sought details from the Ministry on steps taken to implement the Tribunal award.
