The followers of Ramachandrapura Mutt pontiff Raghaveshwara Bharathi allegedly assaulted Parameshwar Dugur, convener of the Shivamogga district unit of the Karnataka Dalita Sangharsha Samiti, on Monday for displaying a back flag during a convention of the seer’s followers here.

Dugur, who was seated among the audience, distributed pamphlets reading “it’s not fair to defend the seer as he has committed a mistake,” to the people who had gathered and displayed a black flag in protest against the stand taken by the followers.

Irked by this, a section of the followers assaulted him. The police brought the situation under control. Dugur is undergoing treatment at a hospital. He has lodged a complaint with the police against several people, alleging assault and caste abuse.

However, the mutt’s Ramakatha programme co-ordinator Gajanana Sharma said the seer had not committed any mistake, referring to the rape case lodged against him.
