Rahul Gandhi postpones state tour

Al India Congress Committee vice-president Rahul Gandhi has postponed his tour of Malnad and coastal areas scheduled to start from November 19, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Thursday.

Rahul was scheduled to undertake a three-day tour in an effort to strengthen the party ahead of the Legislative Assembly election. This included a public rally to mark the birth centenary of late prime minister Indira Gandhi at Chikkamagaluru on November 19, road shows in Kadur and Birur along with a public rally at Shivamogga on November 20 and a convention of fishermen in Kumta of Uttara Kannada district on November 21.

“We had asked him to consider postponing his visit as the Legislative Assembly will be in session for ten days starting November 13,” Siddaramaiah told reporters.

Siddaramaiah dismissed JD(S) state president HD Kumaraswamy’s taunt that the Congress would lose the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency in the election.

Siddaramaiah has announced that he will contest the 2018 polls - perhaps his last - from Chamundeshwari. “It will work to my advantage if my political rivals gang up against me. People will see that and make me win. There are two lakh voters in Chamundeshwari and they are not in Kumaraswamy’s pocket,” he criticised.
