Various rituals were held on Saturday, after the ‘kalasas’ of the gopura (tower) of the Rangathaswamy temple in the town collapsed on Friday.

This was announced at a meeting of the priests and the temple management committee at the office of the commissioner of the endowments department in the temple premises.

It is said the incident had occurred as the wooden planks supporting the ‘kalasas’ had given way. There are five gold-plated brass ‘kalasas’ in the five-storey ‘gopura’ constructed by the Vijayanagar kings in the 9th century. ‘Maha samprokshana’ and ‘kumbhabhisheka’ of the kalasas will be held after their re-consecration.

Agamika Pandit Vijaykumar of the department held discussion about the officials and priests. He said the Archaeological Survey of India had taken up repairs of the towers and they would be requested to pave the way for the re-consecration after the repairs were completed.
