The protestors ransacked government offices and vandalised KSRTC buses. The office of the district urban development cell, the shirastedar’s chamber in the assistant commissioner’s office, the regional transport officer’s office and the forest department office in the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office were ransacked by the protestors.
They damaged computers, furniture and window panes. Corporator Diwakar, Sunil Reddy and others forced the staff out of government offices, damaged the furniture and threw out computers.
Another mob barged into the new bus stand and broke the windshields of KSRTC and APSRTC buses. The group also threw stones on a petrol bunk in the city.
Owners of many shops throughout the city voluntarily downed their shutters fearing violence, while in some places, the mob attacked shopowners forcing them to suspend business, even as police remained mute spectators.
Residents had a tough time travelling in the city due to the bundh. Those coming into the city in State-run buses had a harrowing experience, as the buses coming from all directions were waylaid on the outskirts. The Deputy Commissioner had declared a holiday for schools and colleges as part of the bundh.
BJP workers and Janardhana Reddy supporters held a protest at the Gadigi Chennappa Circle in the morning. They set fire to a picture of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and shouted slogans against her.
The protest went on till 1.30 pm and the mob set tyres on fire. BJP district unit president Guttiganuru Virupakshagowda and other BJP leaders led the protest.
Meanwhile, police prevented a supporter of Janardhana Reddy from dousing himself with kerosene and setting himself ablaze. The police had provided tight security throughout the city to prevent untoward incidents.
