The extended roof of two shops were demolished in Pipeline area following which the residents alleged that demolition was being carried out without prior notice. They were supported by some BJP leaders too.

Municipal Commissioner R S Yarrappa said there was no need to issue a notice to demolish illegal construction. A public notice had already been given calling upon people to demolish illegal structures voluntarily. The operation was taken up since the people did not respond, he said. However, he agreed to give a week’s time to clear the encroachments.

Construction of 25-foot width road and three metre depth drainage will be taken up in Pipeline under the funds available from Karnataka Municipalities Reformation Programme. Marking of buildings for road widening will begin from Saturday.

The municipal authorities later instructed to clear the encroachment on Geeta Road. The Commissioner said a 60-foot road will be constructed from Surajmal Circle to Prasanna Venkataramanaswamy temple by widening the present 40-foot stretch. The road will be widened by 10 feet on either side.

The road widening will begin in the City from next Saturday and widespread publicity will be given for the project, the Commissioner said.
