RTO to distribute smart cards

The smart card provides for storage of digital information and easy access and security to the data. The card owner gets an insurance coverage of Rs 1,00,000 in case of death and Rs 50,000 for permanent disability. The card also records violation of traffic rules committed by the vehicle user and road accidents.

A fee of Rs 200 has been specified for owning such a card. A total of 2.71 lakh vehicles have been registered in Mangalore RTO while 3.69 lakh DLs have been issued. The vehicle owners can convert their DLs and RCs into the smart card within two years, stated RTO in a release.
