Speaking at “Sanskrit Day” organised by Iskcon and Karnataka Sanskrit University here on Tuesday, the Governor termed Sanskrit as the language of moksha. “While other languages could provide material possession, the deliverance (salvation) is possible only through Sanskrit,” he remarked. Describing Sanskrit as the language of Indian culture and heritage, he said the society would be cut off its roots if Sanskrit is neglected.
However, he said Sanskrit is not the original language of India. The original language is Prakrit which was widely used by the common folk. Sanskrit, in contrast, was the sophisticated and sacred language used for religious learning, he noted.
The Governor came down on what he termed ‘narrow interpretation’ of the Vedas which was dividing the society. Taking a dig at the caste system, Bhardwaj said that a true Brahman is one who ha s mastered Sanskrit. Referring to Sanskrit University Vice Chancellor Prof Mallepuram G Venkatesh, a dalit, the Governor said that the former was a true a Brahmin.
Madhu Pandith Das, President, Iskcon spoke of Sanskrit's supremacy over other languages. He said the language suffered a setback due to foreign invasion. Six Sanskrit scholars were felicitated on the occasion.
