Youth should develop an interest in farming to save agriculture. Students should develop a keen interest in farming activities along with their studies, said SCDCC (South Canara District Central Cooperative) Bank chairman M N Rajendra Kumar.
Speaking at the valedictory of the training for arecanut tree climbers — Adike Kaushalya Pade — jointly organised by Campco, ICAR-CPCRI and the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga, at CPCRI regional station at Vittal on Sunday, he said, “Maintenance of arecanut plantation is a challenging task for the farmers due to shortage of labourers. The training of arecanut tree climbers is a good initiative taken by Campco.”
Distributing identity cards for the trainees, Shivamogga Arecanut Research Centre head Dr H Narayanaswamy said, “There has been a shortage of arecanut tree climbers for the last several years. The migration of youth to cities from villages has aggravated the problem of shortage of labourers.”
Campco President S R Sathischandra said, “Campco is ready to train the youth in arecanut tree climbing in the future as well.”
