Trouble has started brewing in the Congress over the selection of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the State.

The Congress Screening committee chairman Luizinho Faleiro and Union Sports Minister Jitendra Singh are rushing to Bangalore on Saturday following several of the State leaders lodging a strong complaint with the high command on the way the KPCC election committee prepared a list of probable candidates.

The party sources said Faleiro and Singh are scheduled to hold a day-long meeting with all the district unit presidents and heads of all frontal organisations on the selection of candidates.

The Central leaders are likely to hold one-to-one meeting with the State leaders and elicit their views. KPCC President G Parameshwara will also be present in the meeting scheduled to be held in KPCC main office.

A section of leaders from State had complained to the high command that the election committee meeting was one-sided and that recommendations made by the party’s block and district units were not taken into consideration, defying the directions issued by Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on candidate selection. Rahul had directed the KPCC to prepare the list of probables strictly on the basis of block and district units’ recommendations.

The election committee meeting, which was chaired by AICC Karnataka incharge Madhusudan Mistry, was held on March 16 and 17 on the outskirts of Bangalore. Due to heavy demand for the party tickets, the committee had recommended a panel of three to five names to 124 constituencies. For the remaining 100 constituencies, single names were proposed.

But several leaders who found their names not recommended rushed to Delhi and complained to the high command against the selection process.

After consulting the State leaders, Faleiro and Singh are likely to submit a report to the high command, which will later take a decision whether to modify the recommendation made by the KPCC election committee.

The Screening Committee, which has been given the responsibility of shortlisting the recommendations made by KPCC election committee, will hold its meeting only after the high command shows the green signal.
